Our Story
Avant Consulting Engineers was established in 2022 to bring a relationship-focused, personal approach back to consulting engineering.
We believe great consulting engineering starts with trust, open communication, and genuine connection. We provide reliable, consulting-first engineering services, working closely with like-minded clients to deliver practical and efficient solutions.
From offices in Toowoomba and Hobart, we work side-by-side with our diverse range of clients from the earliest stages of a project. Taking the time to understand their goals and challenges, and contribute meaningfully to successful project outcomes.

ANDREW WILSON - DIRECTOR
Our Team
Andrew is a Chartered Professional Engineer with over 15 years’ experience in consulting engineering, delivering design, management and construction of projects throughout Australia and Europe. He has a proven track record of delivering innovative and efficient solutions within defined project time and cost restraints, across a range of sectors and construction forms.
Andrew has strong design skills in structural steel, conventionally reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, masonry and timber. He has a wide range of experience across health, heritage, education, industrial, residential and commercial projects of varying scale and complexity.
Qualifications: Bachelor of Engineering - Civil Extended Major (Honours), RPEQ, CPEng, NER.
JAMES OAKES -
SENIOR STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
James is a Senior Structural Engineer with over 10 years’ experience in consulting engineering. Delivering design, project management, and construction supervision of projects throughout Australia, he has a proven track record of delivering innovative, technical and efficient solutions for complex and bespoke projects.
James has strong depth of knowledge and technical design skills in a multitude of materials including structural steel, cold formed steel, aluminium, conventionally reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, masonry and both residential and heavy timber design. He enjoys working closely with architects, consultants and other construction disciplines to provide efficient and suitable project outcomes, and prides himself on maintaining transparency and clear communication throughout the project build lifecycle.
Qualifications: Bachelor of Engineering - Civil (Honours), Masters of Project Management for the Built Environment.
JACK BUCHHORN -
SENIOR STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
Jack is a Senior Structural Engineer with 10 years’ experience in consulting engineering, predominatly throughout South East Queensland. With a focus on collaboration and communcation, Jack has successfully delivered several projects, assisting with design, project management and construction supervision.
Jack has strong design skills across a variety of materials, with a strong focus on the design of low/mid rise concrete structures. Jack has experience delivering both traditionally reinforced and post-tensioned concrete designs, and is able to work with the project team to provide the most economical solution whilst maintaining the desired architectural intent. Beyond concrete, Jack has ample exerience with the design of masonry (including retaining walls), structural steelwork and concrete strengthening. Jack has worked across several sectors, including multi-residential, education, commercial, health and industrial projects of varying scale and complexity.
Qualifications: Bachelor of Engineering - Civil (Honours).
